Lincoln and Marshall counties, TN

Petersburg, on two county lines

Petersburg had 528 people at the 2020 Census and sits across the Lincoln–Marshall county line, 14 miles from our base in Lewisburg. That split matters more than anything else when you’re working out what to do with a load of junk.

Which county’s dump do I use in Petersburg?

It depends on your address, and nobody spells it out online. We looked for a town solid waste page, a county site assignment and a demolition permit rule for Petersburg, and found none of them.

On the Marshall side, the county runs four convenience centers, among them #3 at 1936 Fayetteville Hwy. They refuse tires, commercial waste and hazardous waste. On the Lincoln side, the centers are in Fayetteville, Taft and Flintville, and the Fayetteville one answers at 931-224-1081. Lincoln County’s list of accepted items wasn’t readable when we checked, so ask before you load up.

Before an old building comes down

With no town rule published, check with Petersburg and with whichever county your lot is in. The state has its own requirement as well: a 2019 letter from TDEC, Tennessee’s environment department, which we saw quoted in an excerpt, says a notice is due 10 working days before a building is demolished, asbestos or not. Confirm the current rule with TDEC before you count on that. Our demolition covers sheds, decks, fences and interiors.

What we do in Petersburg

We haul off appliances, carpet, yard debris and household junk, empty out basements, attics and crawl spaces, and move furniture in or out. It’s about 21 minutes from Lewisburg, so a Petersburg job doesn’t take a whole day of driving.

If you do the dump run yourself on the Marshall side, the centers keep Monday-to-Saturday hours, 7:00 a.m. to 5:50 p.m., and any tires have to go separately to Hawkins Dr in Lewisburg.

Around the square

Petersburg was founded in 1814 and incorporated in 1837, and State Routes 129 and 130 meet at its square. The next town on our list in Lincoln County is Fayetteville, the county seat, where the city’s own pickup rules are posted.

Petersburg questions, answered

Which convenience center do Petersburg, TN residents use?

It depends on which side of the Lincoln–Marshall county line your address falls, and neither the town nor the counties publish an assignment we could find. Marshall County runs four centers, one of them at 1936 Fayetteville Hwy; Lincoln County’s Fayetteville center answers at 931-224-1081. Call the county you pay property taxes to.

Is there curbside garbage service in Petersburg, TN?

Petersburg doesn’t post a solid waste or curbside page that we could find, so ask the town directly before you plan on a pickup. Residents can use Marshall or Lincoln County convenience centers. For furniture or a cleanout too big for a car, our crew comes down from Lewisburg, about 21 minutes away.

Do I need a permit to tear down an old building in Petersburg, Tennessee?

Petersburg doesn’t publish a demolition permit rule that we found, so check with the town and your county first. TDEC, the state environment department, has also called for a notice 10 working days before a building is demolished, per a 2019 letter we saw in an excerpt; confirm the current rule with TDEC.

Is Petersburg in Lincoln County or Marshall County?

Both. Petersburg, founded in 1814 and incorporated in 1837, sits on the line between Lincoln and Marshall counties, with State Routes 129 and 130 meeting at its square. That split decides which county’s convenience centers and offices you deal with for trash and building questions.
