Columbia, after the free pickups run out

Columbia Public Works hauls a lot, and it says so plainly: three free bulk pickups a year. The crew checked in on Columbia jobs on June 29 and October 16, 2026, and the town is about 32 minutes from our base in Lewisburg.

What Columbia’s bulk pickup won’t take

Demolition debris tops the list: rocks, dirt, stumps, wallboard and brick. The city’s FAQ also rules out electronics, tires, glass and mirrors, and anything with refrigerant, which covers old refrigerators, freezers and window units. Furniture, mattresses and boxes too big for the cart are fine. You call Public Works at 931-388-8650 to schedule it.

After the third pickup in a year, the city charges $100 plus tipping fees. Brush has its own rules: at the curb by 5 a.m., cut to 4 feet or shorter, with oversize piles also billed at $100.

Where that leaves a remodel

A bathroom tear-out is the clearest case. The tile and wallboard can’t go to the curb, so they need another way out. We do the bathroom and kitchen demolition and take the debris with us.

The same goes for a mirrored dresser, a stack of dead TVs, or a fridge that quit in the garage and that the city won’t touch because of the refrigerant. Those go on the junk removal truck.

Maury County’s convenience centers

The county centers are for Maury residents with proof of residency. A 2021 Daily Herald report and a 2026 county bid notice describe them taking empty freezers and appliances, electronics, and up to 5 gallons of paint a day, with open-top boxes for bulky and demolition waste. We couldn’t read a county page that confirms any of it, so check before you load the truck. Paid tire drop-off is at 1233 Lawson White Dr, from $5 a tire; call 931-375-6402 first.

Permits, and Polk’s house

Columbia doesn’t post a demolition permit rule we could find. The number its FAQ gives for the city is 931-560-1500, and that’s the call to make before a garage or shed comes down.

The President James K. Polk Home & Museum, at 301 W. 7th St, has stood since 1816. South and west of the county seat, Mount Pleasant uses the same Maury County centers.

Columbia questions, answered

Does Columbia TN pick up bulk items?

Yes, three times a year for free. Call Columbia Public Works at 931-388-8650 to schedule furniture, mattresses or boxes too big for the cart; after the third pickup, the city charges $100 plus tipping fees. It won’t take demolition debris, electronics, tires, glass, mirrors or anything with refrigerant.

How do I get rid of drywall and brick in Columbia, Tennessee?

Not through the city’s bulk pickup, which refuses demolition debris: wallboard, brick, rocks, dirt and stumps. Maury County’s centers reportedly have open-top boxes for demolition waste, for residents with proof of residency; confirm with the county before you go. Or have our crew tear it out and haul it away as one job.

Where can I drop off tires in Maury County near Columbia?

At 1233 Lawson White Dr, where tires are a paid drop-off starting at $5 each; Maury County asks you to call 931-375-6402 before you come. Columbia’s curbside bulk pickup won’t take tires at all. Once the tires are out of the garage, the rest of the junk in it is ours to haul.

What size does brush need to be for Columbia curbside pickup?

Four feet or shorter, set at the curb by 5 a.m., according to Columbia’s FAQ. An oversize brush pickup costs $100. If a fallen tree or a cleared fence line leaves more than the city wants to handle, we can load it and haul it away as part of a yard cleanout.
